Step-by-step Tutorial

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Step-by-step Tutorials break complexity into manageable beginnings. By focusing on one action at a time, the game allows players to progress without feeling overwhelmed. Each step builds confidence and prepares the ground for the next.

Cuphead starts with a tutorial that teaches the player all of the basic mechanics in a safe space where the player cannot fail. This lets the player learn the mechanics without any danger while slowly easing them into the game’s mechanics.

The primary goal of this mechanic is to teach basic mechanics and systems by breaking down complex processes into a sequence of manageable, consecutive steps. By visualizing the algorithm of action, it reduces cognitive load and makes it easier for the learner to master individual fragments of a task before tackling the whole. This structured approach is ideal for teaching intricate algorithms or multi-stage tasks that might otherwise feel overwhelming.

Beyond teaching specific content, a tutorial can also be used as a meta-tool to teach the methodology of “how to learn”. It provides a guided introduction in a safe environment, building the learner’s confidence and competence before they move on to more advanced, unguided missions.

Provide learners with a visual roadmap or schema that clearly outlines the consecutive steps needed to reach the goal, serving as a guide for their journey.

Ensure each step is named meaningfully to teach the underlying methodology, using labels that clearly demonstrate what is happening at each stage of the process.
