Rewards
The deepest principle in human nature is the craving to be appreciated.
William James
Rewards satisfy this need for recognition. By acknowledging player effort and achievement, the game makes progress visible and meaningful. Whether through points, items, or symbolic badges, rewards validate actions and encourage continued engagement.
In the Borderlands series the player gets new potentially rare weapons after every mission, as well as from drops during the missions. They also receive XP to level up and gain new skills, and there are also cosmetic modifications that can be found. This gives the players reasons to play the game well after they finish the main story.
Rewards are a straightforward source of dopamine that motivates continued participation and effort. They can be granted for completing specific tasks, reaching milestones, or even unexpectedly to create a sense of surprise and delight. In education, rewards are best used to emphasize the positive effects of success and mastery.
By rewarding desired behaviors – such as accuracy, speed, or thoroughness – educators can use this mechanic to reinforce the specific skills being taught. Rewards serve as a powerful incentive that keeps the learner engaged with the experience over the long term.
Consider both functional and symbolic rewards. Some rewards may unlock new possibilities or tools, while others mainly provide recognition, status, or emotional satisfaction.
Adapt rewards to different player motivations. Some learners value competition, others completion, exploration, creativity, or social recognition, so a variety of reward types can increase engagement.
