Performance Statistics

In God we trust; all others must bring data

W. Edwards Deming

Performance Statistics provide that data. Instead of relying on intuition alone, players can analyze their results, identify patterns, and adjust their approach. The mechanic supports continuous improvement through evidence and reflection.

In Overwatch the player constantly has access to detailed statistics of their play, with accuracy, and current playtime with each character among others. This lets every player be able to improve through knowing what they need to improve in the first place.

Performance statistics act as a “developmental mirror,” providing visual and impactful data about a learner’s growth, speed, and accuracy. They help build a deep awareness of what metrics matter in a given profession – for example, by showing that “client trust” is just as important as “revenue”. This awareness helps learners focus their improvement efforts where they are most needed.

By showing results compared to group averages or past attempts, statistics provide a clear sense of progress and accomplishment. It is an excellent tool for increasing the learner’s satisfaction and sense of identity as they see their “professional self” becoming more efficient and capable over time.

Present data in a clear and accessible way. Statistics should help learners understand their performance quickly rather than overwhelm them with excessive complexity.

Focus on metrics that support learning goals. Track indicators that reflect meaningful behaviors, decisions, or competencies instead of only counting activity.

Use statistics to encourage reflection and improvement. Learners should be able to identify patterns, strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for growth.

Visualize progress whenever possible. Charts, trends, summaries, or simple dashboards can make development easier to interpret and more motivating.

Combine quantitative and qualitative feedback. Numbers become more useful when paired with explanations, recommendations, or contextual insights about what influenced the results.
