Multiple Endings

Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Multiple Endings encourage players to forge their own path. By making decisions that diverge from expected routes, players shape unique narratives that lead to distinct outcomes.

Red Dead Redemtion 2 tracks the players actions through the game and measures their “honor” which adjusts some of the events in the game. This as well as a final choice dictates the ending that the player gets, this gives the actions of the player real consequences and makes them feel like they made a real difference in the story.

Multiple endings show that actions have diverse, meaningful consequences. This mechanic is excellent for teaching cause-effect relationships and demonstrating that there isn’t always one “perfect” answer. It fosters an open and flexible mindset, where learners understand that different strategies can lead to different yet equally valid results.

To be educationally effective, multiple endings should be paired with a debrief that explains how the learner’s decisions led to their specific outcome. This reinforces deep learning and helps participants reflect on their unique approach to problem-solving.

Use multiple endings to stimulate curiosity. Learners often become interested in replaying the experience to discover how different decisions could lead to different outcomes.

Decide whether endings should be judged or simply differentiated. Some learning experiences may benefit from clearly “better” or “worse” outcomes, while others may focus on showing different consequences and perspectives without assigning value.

Treat each ending as a reflection opportunity. The conclusion should encourage learners to think about which decisions, behaviors, or strategies led them there.

Support reflection with meaningful feedback. Summaries, statistics, narrative explanations, or comparisons can help learners better understand the path they followed and its consequences.

Connect endings with professional behavior patterns. Different outcomes can represent different leadership styles, communication approaches, ethical choices, or ways of solving problems within a given field.
