Leaderboards channel this natural drive for competition. By making performance public and comparable, the system introduces ambition, rivalry, and the pursuit of recognition. Players strive not just to succeed, but to stand above others.
In Street Fighter 6 once a player reaches a high enough ranked score, they can see their exact placement on the leaderboards, which motivates the players to constantly keep pushing themselves to have a higher rank and higher place in the leaderboard.
Leaderboards tap into the human need for competition and social status by showing how a learner’s performance compares to their peers. This can strongly motivate participants to repeat exercises and refine their techniques to improve their standing. However, to maintain a positive atmosphere, it is often best to show only the “top” performers to protect the self-esteem of those at the bottom.
Ranking systems work best when the top spots are not permanently held; by providing late-stage opportunities for point gains, you keep the competition active and fair. This mechanic turns the learning process into a dynamic social experience where participants are driven to reach “master” status within their community.
Consider limiting the publicly visible ranking to top positions only. This helps preserve the motivational effect for high performers while reducing discouragement among weaker participants.
Combine public and private feedback. For example, you can display a public Top 10 leaderboard while showing each learner their personal score and position individually.
Use multiple leaderboards when different achievements matter. Separate rankings can highlight different strengths such as speed, collaboration, consistency, creativity, or quality of decisions.
Be careful not to let competition dominate the experience. Leaderboards should motivate learners, not create anxiety or discourage participation from those progressing more slowly.
