Consequences of Decisions
Every action has its consequences
Ralph Waldo Emerson.
Consequences of Decisions ensure that choices truly matter. When players act, the game world responds—sometimes immediately, sometimes over time. Each decision shapes what follows, turning actions into meaningful moments that influence the story, the system, or both.
In the Witcher games the player faces many quests with choices that have long reaching consequences on the world and narrative.
This mechanic focuses on showing the direct, visible link between a learner’s actions and the resulting changes in the world or story. Teaching participants that their decisions matter is a core goal of many trainings. It builds a strong sense of agency and empowerment, as the learner sees that they are the protagonist of their own experience.
Consequences can be immediate or delayed, reflecting the real-world complexity where the results of a choice might not be visible for weeks. This mirrors the professional environment, teaching learners to think critically about the long-term impact of their decisions.
This method works best if the player knows what decision or series of decisions in particular caused the consequences that they are experiencing, otherwise they may feel as though the game is not fair to them.
