Community Challenge

Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.

Helen Keller

Community Challenges transform individual effort into collective impact. Instead of focusing on personal achievement, the game invites all players to contribute toward a shared objective. Progress emerges from the accumulation of many small actions, creating a sense of belonging and shared purpose. Players become part of something larger than themselves, where cooperation and participation drive success.

Helldivers 2 is a game where the entire playerbase is constantly striving to complete tasks which are made with thousands of players in mind.

Community challenges involve a whole group of learners striving toward a shared, collective goal – such as building a shared knowledge base or reaching a total group score. This builds a strong sense of belonging and social identity. It motivates individuals to contribute to the group’s success, creating a supportive and engaging social learning environment.

When individual contributions to a community goal are recognized – either socially or automatically – it provides a powerful sense of pride and status. This mechanic is excellent for mobilizing a large group of learners (e.g., all managers in a company) around a specific objective for a limited time.

Community challenges are by their nature impossible to complete alone. The best games with these challenges constantly adjust their difficulty with the size of the playerbase so these tasks are doable by the amount of people playing but are not possible without most of said playerbase working together.
